The bigger issue here is how the preferences of future generations (or current population in the future) have been assessed, and what weighting they have been given relative to todays preferences (ie discounting)

I think the discounting is a separate but related issue. Reader needs to know what the temporal context for the value assigned is. This will have an impact on the time horizons permitted to see change, and also feed into systems thinking approaches that necessarily take into account flows of resources and stock accumulation that may spans decades vs. depletion that may take less than a decade.
